A BILL
To designate a mountain in the State of California as Mount
Sharsmith.
1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-
2 tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
3 SECTION 1. FINDINGS; COMMEMORATION.
4 (a) FINDINGS.—Congress finds that—
5 (1) Carl W. Sharsmith, Ph.D. was born in 1903
6 and died in 1994;
7 (2) Dr. Sharsmith was a celebrated American
8 naturalist, outdoor educator, alpine botanist, and
9 ranger serving in the Tuolumne Meadows region of
10 Yosemite National Park, where he shared his pas-

1 sion for the natural history of the Sierra Nevada
2 with countless park visitors; and
3 (3) at the time of his death, Dr. Sharsmith was
4 the longest-serving ranger in the history of Yosemite
5 National Park and the National Park Service, hav-
6 ing served from 1929 to 1993.
7 (b) COMMEMORATION.—Congress, in acknowledg-
8 ment of the commitment of Dr. Sharsmith to Yosemite
9 National Park, honors Dr. Sharsmith for his lengthy ca-
10 reer with the National Park Service and recognizes his
11 contribution to the scientific understanding of the High
12 Sierra of California.
13 SEC. 2. DESIGNATION OF MOUNT SHARSMITH.
14 (a) DESIGNATION.—The mountain located at
15 37°56.194’ N, by 119°17.615’ W, in Yosemite National
16 Park and the Inyo National Forest in the State of Cali-
17 fornia, shall be known and designated as ‘‘Mount
18 Sharsmith’’.
19 (b) REFERENCES.—Any reference in a law, map, reg-
20 ulation, document, paper, or other record of the United
21 States to the mountain described in subsection (a) shall
22 be deemed to be a reference to ‘‘Mount Sharsmith’’.
